Arley Berryhill, "Figurative Fiber Sculptor" & Costumer Extraordinaire 2011 Fiber Arts Fiesta Featured Artist |
"Masquerade" by Arley Berryhill |
Arley Berryhill's professional life is from the world of theater. With a background in fashion, make-up, puppetry, sculpting, window display, and dance, his skills are well utilized in the art of doll making. Arley first started creating his cloth figures while living in New York during the height of the "art-doll craze" in the 1990's. He loves to create theatrical characters that are fun, and a bit "over-the-top". Arley's pieces are based on his motto: "More is better" and his love of embellishment and fabric is featured in all of his pieces. Arley is a retired professional specialty costume builder, making hats, masks, accessories, and "creature costumes" for 30 years. He spent many years behind-the-scenes, working backstage in television and theater. His work has taken him to many cities to live, including Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, & Las Vegas. His work has been seen in Broadway theaters, movies, TV shows, Las Vegas revues, and theme parks. His mastery of so many mediums has given him an incredible exposure to many talented designers, artists, and materials and it shows in all of his creations! Retired from "show business", Arley now lives in Albuquerque, and occasionally does works for the Santa Fe Opera in their costume department. He also teaches cloth doll making and designs patterns in his spare time. Arley's dolls & patterns can be seen on his website: www.ArleyBerryhill.com. |
