THE ALBUQUERQUE FIBER ARTS COUNCIL, Inc. |
Promoting fiber art in New Mexico |
The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council, Inc. is a non-profit corporation established in 1999, with the purpose of working with local fiber arts groups to promote fiber arts through educational exhibits and activities. The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta is the Council's main fundraiser and is presented biennially in odd years with the cooperation of the Council's co-sponosring guilds (now numbering 17). The Council publishes the bi-monthly Fiber Arts Newsletter (FAN) that examines current issues of concern and interest to the fiber arts community, highlights area programs, businesses and artists and includes an extensive calendar of current exhibitts, classes and events in New Mexico. Additionally, in keeping with the Council's educational mission, scholarships and monetary funding for individuals and guild programs are now available by application to the Council. See Funding Opportunities. The 2011 Scholarship and Subsidy Funding Awardees are listed at the bottom of this page. Congratulations to all!!! |
COUNCIL BOARD OF DIRECTORS |
The Council is managed by seven directors elected on staggered terms. The 2011 slate of Council directors is as follows: |
Catherine Kelly Frances Starnes Barbara Striegel Jan Lehmann-Shaw Pat Drennan Laura Sandison Leslie Berky Ashcraft |
President Vice-President Treasurer Secretary Fiesta Committee Chair Educational Committee Chair Director, Web Mistress |
Adobe Wools Arts Guild & Cast-N-Knits Desert Design Machine Knitters Thimbleweeds Quilters NM Quilters' Association NM Quilters' Association Enchanted Lacemakers and EGA American Sewing Guild |
The guilds elect or appoint representatives to attend the Fiesta Committee and Educational Committee planning meetings. Members of the guilds man the committees and volunteer for the Fiesta show. It was in 2007 that the Council sponsored the first judged Mixed Media Exhibit with awards at the Fiesta. The Mixed Media Exhibit was moved to a new location at the front of the exhibit hall and attracted a steady flow of viewers who appreciated the many varied approaches to working with fiber. |

The Council has also sponsored two off-year fiber arts shows, an opportunity for the co-sponsoring guilds artists to present their work in a gallery setting. Guild members provided the exhibits and served as docents during gallery hours. Most docents provided demos throughout the duration of the gallery show as well! The first AFAC Fiber Arts Show of work limited to members of local guilds was held April 2006 at the Albuquerque Arts Alliance Gallery, 1100 San Mateo NE, Albuquerque, NM. The second group show of juried work by guild members was also held at the Arts Alliance Gallery May 2- June 2, 2008. A third off-year fiber art show is slated for May of 2012. We'll keep you posted as plans evolve... |
Fashion, Lace, Weaving and Embroidery on Display. 2006 |
In June, 2006, the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council worked with the Library program committee to set up displays and demonstrations of techniques by members of local fiber art guilds at the Albuquerque Main Library. The Fiber Art Storyboards were also exhibited during this month. The Council participated again in Octobers of 2008 and 2010 by setting up fiber art displays at the Albuquerque Main Library. The Council has committed to another library exhibition in October of 2012. |

The Council has several ongoing efforts to publicize and encourage interest in the fiber arts. We periodically print a brochure listing the fiber art guilds and contact numbers that co-sponsor exhibits at the Fiesta. We publish a bi-monthly Fiber Arts Newsletter of events and exhibits in New Mexico. And now, in answer to the many requests the guilds receive for teaching fiber arts, the Council has three Fiber Arts Storyboards that can be loaned to teachers in New Mexico and other group leaders. |

The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council's Education Committee was almost overwhelmed with the wonderful proposals it received for both funding and scholarships by the July 1st deadline! The Fiber Arts Council is very pleased with the great response from guilds, guild members and the public to its latest effort towards educational outreach! After some very intense consideration the lucky few were chosen! Following is a list of the awardees and a short description of their planned use of AFAC subsidy funding and scholarships. Congratulations to all of them; we look forward to seeing the results of their hard work! Scholarship Awards: New Mexico Resident Scholarship in Fibers: Carol Bryant of Rio Rancho, NM Carol seeks to complete the Certified Instructor Program with Judy Niemeyer Quilting. To date, Carol has already completed 2 of the 4 required Training Sessions at Quiltworx Retreat Center in Somers, MT as well as 2 of the 5 required quilts. With the help of this AFAC scholarship, Carol will be able to attend the remaining two workshops and complete her final 3 quilts allowing her to reach her goal of becoming a Judy Niemeyer Certified Instructor. This accomplishment will allow her to be both a speaker and teacher in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Texas while promoting an understanding and appreciation of the quilting arts wherever she goes! Heritage Scholarship: Coleen Konetzni of Rio Rancho, NM Colleen wants to pursue both her ongoing interest and knowledge in the historic use of vegetal dyes as well as learning to weave in the traditional Navajo method. She has been granted the AFAC Heritage Scholarship to take a seven day, total immersion Navajo Weaving Program with Mary Walker. The program will include visiting local weavers and historical sites for a contextual understanding of this form of weaving. Guild Member Scholarship for Workshops and Classes: Lynn Rogers of Rio Rancho, NM Lynn will be continuing in the Art Cloth Mastery Program with Jane Dunnewold. This is a 5 session, 2 ½ year program, each session being 6 days long in San Antonio, TX; Lynn has already completed one session and with the help of this scholarship, will be attending the 2nd later this month. There are only 13 artists from around the U.S. that are accepted into this program and they are expected to complete specific surface design assignments between each session. Lynn is already well-known around these parts for her surface design and various fabric dyeing techniques. The AFAC is very pleased to help her reach her art cloth mastery goals under the tutelage of well-known and respected artist, Jane Dunnwold! Subsidy Funding Award: Subsidy funding: Southwest Women's Fiber Arts Collective Subsidy funding for signage for the upcoming Silver City Fiber Arts Festival, November 11 and 12, 2011 was awarded to the Southwest Women's Fiber Arts Collective, this first time event's sponsor. AFAC is pleased to support our fellow fabric artists in Southern New Mexico and wish them every success next month! (See this FAN's pullout calendar listing for complete details on the Silver City Arts Festival and make plans now to attend!) |
