"Growing Future Artists"

Special Exhibits

Our Special Exhibit for 2017 will be Anne Podlesak. Anne is a knitwear designer, indie dyer, and teacher. She is the owner of Wooly Wonka Fibers, providing high quality, hand-dyed yarns and fibers to knitters. Her design work has been featured in Interweave Knits, Spin-Off, Knit.Wear magazines, as well as several Knitpicks design collections and her book, Free Spirit Knits, available through F&W Media/Interweave. She also has a wide variety of standalone knitwear designs available via Ravelry. Her designs and colorways are often inspired by books and art, as well as the gorgeous scenery around her home in northern New Mexico. Anne is sure to be a huge hit in 2017, not only with knitters but with all our fiber artists!

The Dropped Stitch Knitters Guild is inviting all knitters to participate in the exhibit by knitting Anne’s commemorative Fiesta Design. Anne has designed an exclusive shawl pattern and color way for the Fiesta that all knitters can make. You can obtain a pattern by e-mailing Anne at anne.podlesak@gmail.com or at The Yarn Store at Nob Hill. Balloon Fiesta Shawl is an elongated crescent-shape shawl, suitable for one skein (435 yards) of fingering sock-weight yarn. It is knit from the bottom hem up to the back neck and features a wide border of balloon motifs in a simple textured (knit/purl) pattern. The body of the shawl is shaped with short rows. It is suitable for an adventurous beginning knitter, but would make a quick and easy project for a more experienced knitter. The gradient colorway, New Mexico Sky, begins with bright blue, fading into sky blue interspersed with puffy white clouds. Just like the Albuquerque summer sky!

Charity Event

Fiesta 2017 will sponsor and provide support for a local non-profit organization, Susan’s Legacy, chosen for the Charity Event by the Fiesta Committee. Susan’s Legacy, www.susanslegacy.org serves women with co-occurring mental and addictive disorders. They are proud of the women in the program who go on to become healthy, productive citizens of Albuquerque.

Susan's Legacy is a small, non-profit agency that provides intensive recovery support for women with co-occurring mental health and addictive disorders.  The goal for clients is to move from surviving to thriving as self-sufficient, contributing community members. Clients must be committed to recovery and actively engage in the services provided by SL to support the goals of becoming mentally stable and substance free.  Findings from the National Institute on Drug Abuse show that effectively treating addiction includes a long-term approach that provides treatment for the multiple needs of clients. Susan’s Legacy addresses these needs by providing case management, individual mental health and addiction counseling, and psycho-educational groups.  Susan’s Legacy provides services to clients free of charge. Because clients don’t pay for these services, Susan’s Legacy is dependent upon grants, donations, and fundraising to continue its work with co-occurring women.

Visitors to Fiesta can offer their support with a $5 donation (or more!). With each donation, the visitor can select a gift item from the table. Gift items (Doo-Dahs) are fiber art articles hand made by guild members.

The Educational Exhibit just keeps getting better with every show! There are surprises in store for Fiesta 2017, so be sure to go by the Education Booth. You will see some wonderful items entered in our Youth Division, as well as see the results of some of the scholarships funded in the past two years.
