THE COUNCIL

Promoting fiber art in New Mexico

It was in 2007 that the Council sponsored the first  judged Mixed Media Exhibit with awards at the Fiesta.  The Mixed Media Exhibit was moved to a new location at the front of the exhibit hall and attracted a steady flow of viewers who appreciated the many varied approaches to working with fiber.  Many thanks to Emily Holcomb who was the curator of  this exhibit.

Visitors fill the Mixed Media Exhibit curated by Emily Holcomb.

And in June, 2006, the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council worked with the Library program committee to set up displays and demonstrations of techniques by members of  local fiber art guilds at the Albuquerque Main Library. The Fiber Art Storyboards were also exhibited during this month.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council, Inc. developed from a committee set up by the New Mexico Quilters' Association, Inc. to produce the 1997 Fiber Arts Fiesta.  It proved so beneficial to have a forum for sharing concerns and interests for all the guilds involved that the non-profit, educational AFAC was incorporated in 1999. Karen Schueler was the founding president.  The biennial Fiber Arts Fiesta is now the main fundraiser for the Council and strives to promote fiber art in the community and to foster individual excellence in fiber art.

New Mexico has some of the nation's finest fiber artists working professionally or as expert amateurs. The Fiber Arts Fiesta is an opportunity for these artists to show off their work and for artists to see some of the latest products and supplies.

The Council is managed by seven directors elected on staggered terms. The guilds elect or appoint representatives to attend the Fiesta planning meetings.  Members of the guilds man the committees and volunteer for  the Fiesta show.

The Council has several ongoing efforts to publicize and encourage interest in the fiber arts.  We periodically print a brochure listing the fiber art guilds and contact numbers that co-sponsor exhibits at the Fiesta.  We publish a bi-monthly Fiber Arts Newsletter of events and exhibits in New Mexico. And now, in answer to the many requests the guilds receive for teaching fiber arts, the Council has three Fiber Arts Storyboards that can be loaned to teachers in New Mexico and other group leaders.
